The city of Athens was burned and looted by Union troops in a raid by Colonel Turchin in May 1862. The 1st Alabama Cavalry failed in its attempt to take Athens from Union forces holding the city in the Jan. 26, 1864 Battle of Athens.

Live Music

The Alabama Opry is a local event center with a variety of musical shows throughout the year such as Tribute to the Grand Ole Opry, Salute to Hee Haw, Keeping Country Alive and more as well as a dance each Friday night.
Have you ever wanted to sing barbershop harmony?  If so, here’s your chance.  Each Thursday night at 7:00 PM, the Barbershop Harmony Society Chapter Chorus, Southern Splendor, rehearses at Athens Bible School.
The dulcimer has long been a favorite instrument for those wishing to play a string instrument.  Every 1st & 3rd Thursday night at 6:30 PM, the Athens Dulcimers play at the Athens Recreation Center.   Everyone is welcome to enjoy the music.  Lessons are offered for beginne
