Historic Walking Tour

Self-guided tour, approx. 1 hour. Start tour at the Old Courthouse Museum. View Monroeville as Harper Lee and Truman Capote knew it during their childhood in the 1930s. Operated by Monroe Co. Heritage Museums.

Historic Grand Hotel

Since 1847. Converted to Confederate hospital during Civil War. 21st Alabama Infantry maintained garrison on grounds. Served as Marine training ground during WWII. Confederate Rest Cemetery on grounds.

Historic Blakeley State Park

Remains of earthen forts, old rifle pits, redoubts and battery sites dot the park's 3,800 acres. Following the fall of nearby Spanish Fort on the night of April 8, 1865, orders were issued to take Blakeley by assault. The General advance began at 5:25 p.m. on April 9, six hours after Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Fort Blakeley fell in the last battle of the Civil War.

Fendall Hall

Completed 1860. One of great Italianate-style houses surviving in Alabama. 1880s hand-painted murals and stenciling in 1st-floor rooms recognized as among finest in country.

El Cazador Museum

Artifacts from 1784 Gulf of Mexico shipwreck of El Cazador—the wreck that changed the world. Silver coins (dated 1783) from this Spanish brig of war available for purchase.

First White House of the Confederacy

1835 Italianate-style house was home to President and Mrs. Jefferson Davis while capitol of Confederacy was in Montgomery. Home completely furnished with period pieces from 1850s and 1860.
